Daikin Heat Pumps + Photovoltaics

Heating, cooling and hot water using solar energy

Hellenic Energy designs integrated energy solutions that combine Daikin heat pumps with photovoltaics, Victron or Deye inverters and, where required, Pytes V5 lithium batteries. The goal is year-round comfort, reduced energy purchased from the grid, and proper energy management of the home.

Daikin Altherma 4 H: an integrated solution for the modern home

Daikin Altherma 4 H outdoor unit in a home

The Daikin Altherma 4 H is an air-to-water heat pump that can provide heating, cooling and domestic hot water, depending on the installation configuration. It can be combined with underfloor heating, fan coils and suitable water radiators.

The most important thing is not simply to choose a large pump. The correct power is determined by a study of heat losses, the actual outdoor temperatures of the area, insulation, frames, altitude, output bodies and the desired temperature of the house.

Why combine a heat pump with photovoltaics?

Photovoltaics and Daikin heat pump in a modern home

Heat pumps consume electrical energy. When the house has a photovoltaic system, a significant portion of this energy can be generated on-site during daylight hours. This increases self-consumption and reduces reliance on the grid.

  • Solar production for the loads of the residence and the heat pump.
  • Smart energy management based on production and consumption.
  • Ability to store surplus energy in batteries.
  • Backup capability for selected loads or the entire installation, depending on the design.
  • Better utilization of daily production from photovoltaics.

Victron or Deye with Pytes V5 lithium batteries

Victron system with Pytes V5 lithium batteries for energy storage

For installations requiring storage, energy autonomy or real backup, Hellenic Energy can design a system with Victron or Deye inverters and Pytes V5 lithium batteries. A battery is not mandatory for a heat pump to work with photovoltaics, but it can increase self-consumption and cover loads when there is no solar production.

Example of a 100 sq.m. residence

In a 100 square meter residence, there is no single correct heat pump power. Two houses of the same square footage can have completely different heat losses. A well-insulated new house with underfloor heating may require much less thermal power than an old stone house with high water temperatures.

Therefore, we examine:

  • Heat losses per room.
  • Wall, ceiling, and floor insulation.
  • Frames and glazing.
  • Climatic zone, altitude, and minimum outdoor temperature.
  • Underfloor heating, fan coils, or existing radiators.
  • Domestic hot water needs.
  • Daily and annual electricity consumption.
  • Available area for photovoltaics.

What changes in houses of 80, 100, 150 or 200 sq.m.?

Square meters are only a first indication. For 80, 100, 150 or 200 sq.m., Hellenic Energy does not apply a general rule of kW per square meter. The Daikin power and the size of the photovoltaic system are calculated from the heat losses and the actual energy profile.

This avoids oversizing, frequent starts, unjustifiably high investment and poor performance. Similarly, we avoid undersizing, which can lead to insufficient heating or excessive use of auxiliary electric heaters.

Heat pump or air conditioners?

Modern inverter air conditioners also function as air-to-air heat pumps. For selective heating of a few rooms, they can be a very economical solution. A central air-to-water heat pump, however, offers a different level of integration: central heating, cooling capability, domestic hot water and cooperation with a hydraulic network.

The right choice depends on the usage of the house, the layout, operating hours and the existing distribution system.

Energy flow: from the sun to heating

House with photovoltaics and heat pump at sunset
  1. Photovoltaics generate electricity.
  2. The inverter powers the loads of the residence and the heat pump.
  3. Excess energy can be stored in Pytes V5 batteries, if a storage system exists.
  4. The energy management system monitors production, consumption and battery status.
  5. When solar production is insufficient, the installation is supplemented by the grid or stored energy, depending on the configuration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Daikin heat an entire two-story house?

Yes, provided a proper thermal loss study, correct sizing, and proper hydraulic distribution in the spaces are carried out.

Is it economical to operate?

It can be very efficient, but the actual consumption depends on outdoor temperatures, water temperature, insulation, operating hours, the emission system, and settings.

Can it work with old radiators?

In many cases, yes, but it must be checked if the radiators provide the required thermal power at the water temperatures that will be used. The lower the required supply temperature, the more favorable the performance generally is.

Is a battery absolutely necessary?

No. A heat pump can work with photovoltaics without a battery. Storage is added when increased self-consumption, backup, or greater energy autonomy is desired.

How many photovoltaics are needed for a 100 sq.m. house?

There isn't a correct number based solely on square footage. Consumption data, heat pump power and operating mode, available roof space, orientation, and self-consumption target are required.

Can the same installation cover an electric car?

Yes, EV charging can be included in the overall energy design, with appropriate inverter power, photovoltaics, electrical panel, and load management.

Study and installation by Hellenic Energy

The correct solution begins with the actual data of the building. We study the house, heat losses, consumption, and available space for photovoltaics, and design an integrated system with priority on safety, efficiency, and future expandability.
